World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December. The UN General Assembly designated 5 December 2014 as the first official World Soil Day. The date of 5 December, the birthday of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, the Late King of Thailand, was chosen for WSD to honour His Majesty’s promotion of soil science and dedication to soil resource conservation.

On this day, the importance of soil is to be celebrated in various corners of the world as it is a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human wellbeing through its contribution to food, water, and energy security and its role in mitigating biodiversity loss and climate change.
