The Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon, in collaboration with Department of Mental Health and Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development (RICD), Ministry of Public Health of Thailand, organized a study visit in Chiang Mai, Thailand, during 14-17 January 2015 for a delegation of 15 participants from Myanmar, comprising government officials from Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement, as well as professionals and executive members of Myanmar Autism Association.

During the trip, the Myanmar delegation attended the 3rd Conference of Child Development and Mental Health at RICD, which was a forum for sharing knowledge and experiences of professionals from various fields and different countries who worked with children with special needs.  They also had briefing at the RICD Training Centre on how RICD developed community-based approach to engage parents and the community in caring for these children so that they will grow up to be dependable and responsible adults. They also visited RICD facilities, specially designed to create conducive environment for children to learn with fun and help develop their skills.

RICD Training Centre also serves as a budget hotel for parents and children from outside of Chiang Mai who come for training, as well as participants who attend functions organized by RICD.  The hotel is operated by volunteer parents and grown up children with special needs, which is one of the key factors that RICD becomes a successful model since it receives strong support from parents and community.

The Myanmar delegation also visited the Dara Academy which offers co-education system for ordinary children and children with special needs, and the Kawila Anukul School which is a specialized school for children with special needs.  Apart from academic subjects, both schools also offer vocational subjects which the children can learn and earn income. Important things that these schools have in common are the understanding teachers and parents who are devoted to caring for these children with special needs and the community which accept them.

The Myanmar delegation learned a great deal from this trip about how to properly care for children with special needs and how to create conducive environment to help improve their skills.  They are determined to apply what they have learned in child development and parent engagement for the benefits of children with special needs in Myanmar.

Thanks to the generous support of Nok Airline, Muang Thai Life Assurance, KPMG Thailand, and Air Bagan, this study visit was made possible and achieved the noble mission to support children with autism to grow up with their full potentials and realize their dreams.
