On 10 October 2014, Assoc. Prof. Naraporn Chan-o-cha, Spouse of H.E. Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, presided over the opening ceremony of the Thai Study Centre at Yangon University of Foreign Languages (YUFL).

The Thai Study Centre was set up in 2013 under the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Establishment of Thailand-Myanmar Diplomatic Relations, and to complement the Project “Curriculum Development in Teaching Thai Language” at YUFL, also supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, in collaboration with Naresuan University, since 2009.

The Thai Study Centre will serve as a library and a resource centre, fitted with computers and audio-visual equipment so that students can practice their language skills and search information about Thailand.  It will also provide friendly environment and interesting books and materials for students to learn and practice the Thai language with fun. Thai language is one of the 9 languages taught as a major at YUFL.

On this occasion, Assoc. Prof. Naraporn Chan-o-cha also presented as gifts to YUFL a set of books about Thailand and Thai language, as well as a set of Thai handmade dolls from Ramayana Epic, which will be showcased in the Thai Study Centre to inspire students to learn more about Thai literatures.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Royal Thai Embassy attach importance to supporting the learning of Thai language and culture, and always engage YUFL lecturers and students in Thai activities as a means to further strengthen people-to-people relations and to expose them to Thai people and genuine way of Thai life.
